Mission Statement

The Cal Poly Humboldt Psychology department is dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate students with the skills to scientifically and critically evaluate psychological processes. Our courses address the impact of culture and context on human functioning, fostering an appreciation for differences through research and applied experiences. We value and respect diversity as a strength and in this regard seek to attract and retain the best possible students, staff, and faculty. We prepare our students to apply their knowledge and skills from psychology to create a socially just and equitable society.

Psychology Department Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the major concepts, theories, and empirical findings in the core content areas of psychology.

  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of methodological, analytical, and research skills appropriate to the field of psychology.

  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the sociocultural and contextual nature of psychology.

  4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of ethics involved in conducting research and working in the field of psychology.

  5. Students will demonstrate skills needed for postbaccalaureate employment, graduate, or professional school. 

Cal Poly Humboldt Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
  1. Equity and Social Justice – HSU graduates will be able to identify and evaluate systems of power and privilege and identify methods for creating diverse, inclusive, and racially just and equitable communities.

  2. Sustainability and Environmental Awareness – HSU graduates will be able to explain how the functions of the natural world, society, and the economy depend on the resilience, sustainability, and conservation of ecological systems.

  3. Information Literacy – HSU graduates will be able to locate, evaluate, and employ information effectively and ethically for a wide range of purposes.

  4. Critical Thinking – HSU graduates will be able to critically evaluate issues, ideas, artifacts, and evidence to guide their thinking.
