Risk and Resilience in Adolescence: A Cultural Perspective
Speaker: Marcela Raffaelli, Ph.D.
Bio: Dr. Raffaelli received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She is currently a professor in the department of human development and family studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She teaches such courses as US Latino/a families, Advanced Adolescences, and Parenting. She has received multiple research grants from various agencies including the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, William T Grant Foundation, and the Jacobs Foundation. She was an invited participant at the World Health Organization for adolescent health. She has published over 80 peer reviewed journal articles in top journals such as Child Development, Journal of Research on Adolescence, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, along with writing book chapters, book reviews, newsletter articles, and technical reports. She was an editor for the Journal of Research on Adolescence in addition to being a reviewer for multiple journals and conferences such as Developmental Psychology, Child Development, and Family Relations.
Research: Dr. Raffaelli’s work centers around the adaptation and well being of rural Latino youth and families, gender-related socialization in Latino families, and developmental risk and resilience among diverse populations such as homeless and impoverished Brazilian youth, children of divorce, and immigrant families.
